The FDA has approved the marketing of the corticosteroid ciclesonide (Alvesco - Sepracor) in a hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) metered-dose inhaler formulation for maintenance treatment of asthma in patients >12 years old. Ciclesonide is also available in the US as a nasal spray for allergic rhinitis (Omnaris), and has been available for asthma in Europe since 2003.

A combination of the corticosteroid mometasone furoate (Asmanex) and the long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) formoterol (Foradil) has become available in a single metered-dose inhaler (Dulera – Schering) for treatment of asthma in patients ≥12 years old. It is the third corticosteroid/LABA combination inhaler to become available for this indication in the US. None of these combinations should be used for initial treatment of asthma or for acute treatment of asthma symptoms.

The chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants in MDIs are being replaced by hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellants for environmental reasons: CFCs contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. The FDA has announced changes in the labeling of simvastatin to reduce the risk of myopathy. These changes include limiting the use of the 80-mg maximum dose to patients who have been taking it for 12 months or more without evidence of myopathy and new recommendations for use of simvastatin with other drugs. Simvastatin is available alone (Zocor, and others) and in combination with ezetimibe (Vytorin) and with niacin (Simcor).
